To meet our dogs, visit our shelter between 10am to 2pm on Saturdays (weather permitting).
- You must be 21 to adopt a dog from our shelter.
- Our dogs are required to be on monthly flea and tick and monthly heartworm preventative at minimum March through November.
- All pets in your home must be spayed/neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations.
- Current dogs in your home must have a recent heartworm test during their last annual physical and be on heartworm preventive.
- A veterinary check will be completed if there are currently pets in the home.
- Dogs Forever will not adopt dogs to applicants (or any other household members) with any conviction, misdemeanor or felony, for the following offenses: domestic violence, animal abuse, animal cruelty, or animal neglect.
- By putting in an application, all humans are required to come meet the dog you are interested in the following Saturday during open hours at the shelter between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. If this truly does not work with your schedule, you are required to email and to arrange a different day/time for your application to be considered.
If you are interested in possibly meeting one of our dogs, please submit an Application.. After this, again, it’s a requirement for you and anyone in the household to come meet the dog you’re interested in the following Saturday during open hours from 10-2pm or by appointment if that day/time doesn’t work for you. You can set that appointment up by emailing our adoption committee directly adoption@dogsforever.org or by calling 319-320-5522. Once you’ve met the dog, if our Adoption Committee feels the match is a potentially good one for that particular dog, you will be contacted. We have an all-volunteer staff and most of us have “day jobs” so it usually takes around two weeks to process an application. We require our dogs to be on monthly preventative at minimum March through November; preferably year round.
Note: Adoption applicants may ignore the FOR FOSTERS ONLY section at the end of the Application.
Our adoption fees vary based on age:
- $150 Senior Dogs (7 years and older)
- $250 Adult Dogs (between 1 and 6 years old)
- $350 Puppies (1 year old and under)
Please note that reference checks and a home visit are part of our foster/adoption process.
If you have general questions, please e-mail us at info@dogsforever.org.
Please email dog/adoption questions to adoption@dogsforever.org.
Please email foster questions to foster@dogsforever.org.
We respond to all questions and requests as soon as possible.
Note: we have an all-volunteer staff (and most of us have “day jobs”) so it may take 7-10 days to process an application. We do not call you about your application, we expect applicants to come meet the dog(s) they’re interested in on Saturday from 10-2. If that day/time doesn’t work for you, after an application is submitted, you’re required to email in to see about setting up a different day/time.
