Available Dogs

To meet our dogs, visit our shelter between 10am to 2pm on Saturdays (weather permitting).

  • You must be 21 to adopt a dog from our shelter.
  • Our dogs are required to be on monthly flea and tick and monthly heartworm preventative at minimum March through November.
  • All pets in your home must be spayed/neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations.
  • Current dogs in your home must have a recent heartworm test during their last annual physical and be on heartworm preventive.
  • A veterinary check will be completed if there are currently pets in the home.
  • Dogs Forever will not adopt dogs to applicants (or any other household members) with any conviction, misdemeanor or felony, for the following offenses: domestic violence, animal abuse, animal cruelty, or animal neglect.
  • By putting in an application, all humans are required to come meet the dog you are interested in the following Saturday during open hours at the shelter between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. If this truly does not work with your schedule, you are required to email and to arrange a different day/time for your application to be considered.

If you’re interested in meeting one of our dogs, please start by submitting an application. After your application is received, it is required that you — along with everyone in your household — come meet the dog(s) you’re interested in. Open Hours are help every Saturday 10:00am–2:00pm, or by appointment if that time does not work for you. Do not bring any pets along.

To request an appointment outside of open hours, you may email our Adoption Committee directly at adoption@dogsforever.org or leave a message at 319-320-5522. Please keep in mind that we are 100% volunteer-run, and most of our volunteers also work full-time jobs. We will always try our best to accommodate varying schedules, but we cannot guarantee availability outside of normal Saturday open hours.

We do not adopt to the first applicant. We often receive multiple applications for our dogs and make placement decisions based on what is the best fit for each individual dog.

Once your application has been submitted and all household members have met the dog, our Adoption Committee will review the application and your visit summary from meeting the dog. If we feel the match is a strong potential fit for that particular dog, you will be contacted. Because we are an all-volunteer organization, application processing typically takes around two weeks.

Thank you for your patience and for considering adoption! 🐾
